Series Building the company site without an agency Part 3 of 8

How far the block editor gets you, and where it stops

Knowing what the built-in editor already does saves money before you buy a builder — and the signal that you need one arrives later than you think.

WordPress ships with the block editor. It costs nothing extra, it survives a theme change, and it updates with core. Yet plenty of founders buy a page builder before spending even a few days with it.

This is not an argument against builders. It is an argument that a builder is a tool with a price attached, and buying before you know the price is hard to reverse. Establish what the built-in editor already does first.

What the built-in editor already does

Beyond paragraphs, headings and images, the block editor carries real layout tools. Columns give you two or three across; a Group block makes a section with its own background and spacing; a Cover block sets text over an image.

Two more things raise its usefulness sharply. The first is patterns: save an arrangement you use often and drop it into any page. The second is the global styles that modern themes expose — set colours and type sizes in one place and every page follows.

The range to check before buying — all five come at no extra cost

Where it genuinely struggles

There are areas where the built-in editor becomes laborious. Specifying different arrangements precisely at each screen width, showing and hiding sections conditionally, and building complex forms with dependent fields are the usual three.

When those needs turn up repeatedly, in real work, that is the moment to evaluate a builder. Buying one because it “might be needed someday” only means your visitors carry the weight of features nobody uses.

Buy a builder knowing the price

Adopt a builder and your page layout is stored in the database. Convenience arrives, and so do a few consequences.

The trade in adopting a builder — fine when chosen knowingly, costly when not

There is a practical middle path: use the builder for article bodies while letting the theme own the site’s frame — header, footer and the main fixed pages. You keep the editing comfort without tying the whole site to a single plugin.

How themes and plugins affect performance is covered in the Themes & plugins archive, and if a builder-heavy site has grown slow, cleaning it up is part of our optimization program.

Next part

With the editor understood, consistency comes next. The following part covers setting colours and fonts in one place, so the site does not become a different site on every page.

Themes & plugins Practical

Decide the editable regions before you design them

A design the CMS cannot express stays up for negotiation long after it ships. Deciding what editors may change, first, removes the negotiation entirely.
