Series Turning the site into revenue Part 1 of 8

Payment, booking or enquiry: which conversion is yours?

It looks like a feature choice, but it decides the shape of your business. Pick the wrong one and the tool starts dictating your pricing and your day.

When deciding what to put on the site, most founders ask it this way: a payment button, a booking system, or just an enquiry form? It sounds like a feature choice. It is actually a decision about the shape of your business. Once installed, a tool demands what it needs, and your pricing, your replies and your calendar start bending to fit.

So reverse the order. Do not pick the tool first — write down how your deals actually close.

Three conversion models

On a business site the visitor’s final action is nearly always one of three, and the three require completely different preparation.

Three conversions — each one asks the site to prepare something different

Payment suits a deal whose price is settled in advance: one product, or a few, and nothing that changes per customer. If the price genuinely varies and you take money first, you end up saying “that part is extra” after the fact — and that sentence starts a refund conversation.

Booking suits businesses that sell time. If when is the heart of the deal — consultations, treatments, classes — then a reservation is the conversion. In exchange you now need availability, closures, double-booking prevention, and rules for changes and cancellations. Bolt booking onto a business where time is not the point and you have bought pure admin.

Enquiry suits work whose price emerges from a discussion about scope: services, builds, consulting. The conversion is not a payment but the start of a conversation — which is exactly why the form should be short.

How to choose — three questions

This does not take long. Three questions usually narrow it to one.

Top two true means payment; the middle line means booking; the bottom two mean enquiry

Mixtures are common. When they occur, choose one primary conversion and demote the rest. Three buttons of equal size on a screen do not produce a choice; they produce an exit.

Choose wrongly and the tool rewrites the business

The most frequent failure is installing more machinery than the business needs. Put a full shop system behind a single product and you now maintain stock, shipping, variations and tax settings you never use. The opposite failure is just as costly: a payment button on genuinely variable work forces you to describe the price more simply than it is, and you pay for that simplification later.

A tool is a container for the business, not a definition of it. Write the closing sentence of your deal first, then buy the smallest thing that supports it.

How heavy each tool really is gets covered in the Themes & plugins archive, and the order we work in is published step by step on our process page.

Next part

If your conversion turned out to be “enquiry”, the form is your shop window. The next part is about shortening it — though the real work is not deletion but deciding what earns its place.

Decide the editable regions before you design them

A design the CMS cannot express stays up for negotiation long after it ships. Deciding what editors may change, first, removes the negotiation entirely.
