Series Designing site structure Part 1 of 8

Draw the sitemap before the screens

Design screens first and you end up retrofitting the relationships between them. Structure decides URLs, navigation and what search can find.

Most site projects begin with a wireframing tool. You draw the home page, then a service page, then a contact page. In that order, how the screens relate to one another is decided last: you retrofit a menu onto pages that already exist, and when the menu feels wrong you redraw the pages.

Changing the order once removes that rework. The first thing to draw is not a screen — it is the sitemap.

Three things structure decides first

Site structure is not a question about the inside of a page. It is about the relationships between pages, and those relationships settle three things before any visual work starts.

Settle the structure and the rest follows — reverse it and you decide all three twice

First, addresses. Which page sits under which becomes the path itself. Second, navigation. A menu is a summary of the structure; it is not the structure. Third, what a search engine reads as a single subject. When articles on one topic share a parent path, that path becomes a signal in itself. Scattered across unrelated paths, they signal nothing.

What belongs on each line of the sitemap

A planner’s sitemap cannot stop at a tree of page names. For a designer and a developer to work from it alone, each line needs at least this much attached.

What each sitemap line carries — the bottom two are not deliverables of this stage

If you cannot write “the question this page answers” in one line, it is not yet a page you need. That single rule filters out a large share of an early sitemap, and the pages it removes are usually better off as a section of another page.

The order that works

In practice this sequence is fastest. List the questions visitors arrive with. Group those questions into subjects. Place pages under each subject. Only then translate the arrangement into URLs.

Changing only the order removes most of the rework

It matters that you do not imagine the design at this stage. The moment a thought like “this page is a row of three cards” arrives, structure starts following layout. What you are deciding now is what belongs where, not how it will look.

How structure turns into search visibility is covered further in the SEO archive, and if you would rather have an existing site’s structure reviewed first, a structural audit is part of our optimization program.

Next part

With a sitemap drawn, the next job is turning it into addresses. The next part covers URL design — and to give away the conclusion, a URL is not decoration. It is the structure, said out loud.

Before you trust the trend: a data quality check

Office traffic, bots and duplicated tags all inflate the figures — and not by a steady amount, which is what makes reading a trend so dangerous.
