Series Launching alone — WordPress from zero Part 6 of 8

Registering with search engines and confirming your first index

A site the search engines do not know about might as well not exist. Registration takes thirty minutes, and there are specific screens to check afterwards.

It is easy to assume search engines will find you on their own, but a new site takes time to be discovered. Telling them directly shortens that considerably and, more importantly, gives you a channel that tells you when something breaks. That is the real reason to register.

The procedure — two services, one pattern

Google Search Console and other webmaster tools follow the same shape: add the site, verify ownership, submit a sitemap.

Four steps to register — the same flow across search engines

Verification proves the site is yours. You choose between uploading an HTML file, adding a meta tag, or adding a DNS record. If you run an SEO plugin, the meta tag route is easiest — the plugin has a field for the verification code.

A sitemap is the list of your pages. Your SEO plugin generates it, so you only submit the address, usually /sitemap_index.xml or /wp-sitemap.xml. Open it in a browser first and confirm it really lists pages before submitting.

What to check afterwards

Submitting is not the end. A few days later, confirm that pages are actually indexed by searching site:yourdomain.com. If nothing appears, the cause is usually one of these.

What to check when nothing is indexed — the first line is overwhelmingly common

That first item dominates. It is the development-time setting from an earlier part, left on through launch.

The screens to check weekly

Here is where registration pays off. The performance report shows which queries you appear and get clicked for — that is a list of the words your customers actually use. It frequently differs from the keywords you imagined, and the gap becomes the topic of your next article.

The indexing report surfaces crawl errors. Growing 404s or redirect problems show up here first.

Next part

Once you appear in search, enquiries follow. But installing a contact form and never receiving the mail is extremely common — the next part covers why, and how to fix it.
