Series Turning the site into revenue Part 5 of 8

Anatomy of a pricing page: exclusions at the same size

Hide the price and you become a "call us" service; list only inclusions and you inherit a scope dispute. One page structure removes both problems at once.

The pricing page is the most carefully read screen on your site. Someone reaching it has already started deciding whether to buy, which makes a single sentence here heavier than ten paragraphs elsewhere.

What hiding the price actually does

“Contact us for pricing” is usually an attempt to keep room to negotiate. The visitor reads it differently: a service you have to ask about — possibly expensive, possibly different for everyone. Someone trying to size up a budget generally leaves at that point.

If the price genuinely varies every time, publish a reference point rather than an exact figure. One sentence of the form “from X, for work of this shape” lets a visitor check it against their budget, and the enquiries that follow are noticeably better qualified.

Six pieces of the page

Six pieces — the order matches the order visitors ask in

The sequence matters. Show the price first and everything after it reads as justification for that price. Put it last and every explanation is read by someone who still does not know what this costs. Same content, different persuasive weight.

Why exclusions get the same size

Pricing pages that list only inclusions are common. But disputes always grow from what was not written down — the item the customer assumed was obviously included and you assumed was obviously extra.

Exclusions are not defensive small print; they are how expectations get aligned

It feels as though writing exclusions will cost you conversions. What it actually costs you is the deals that were never going to work. The list also helps you sell: a customer who can see exactly what sits outside the scope can decide to commission it too.

One practical rule: put the exclusions in the same type size and the same part of the page as the inclusions. Tucked into a footnote or pushed to the bottom, they exist without being read — which protects nobody.

Put eligibility up front

If the service has conditions — a particular environment, or types of work you do not take — say so near the top. Accepting an unqualified enquiry and refusing it later produces a refund, a dispute and a bad impression in one go. Filtering early lowers enquiry volume but raises completion rate and satisfaction.

You are welcome to read our own optimization program page as a worked example — inclusions, exclusions and requirements all carry the same weight there. Designing page structure from a search perspective is covered in the SEO archive.

Next part

With the price stated honestly, one question remains: can these people be trusted? The next part covers what builds that trust — and names the one thing that destroys it instantly.
