Portal blog or your own site: where the asset accumulates

A portal blog reaches people, and it is often worth doing. Just be clear from the start about whose asset accumulates there.

This question comes up almost immediately for any Korean business starting with content: publish on a portal blog, or on your own site? Naver, the dominant search portal here, runs a blogging platform of its own, and it is where a great deal of Korean content lives. The short answer is do both, with different jobs — but be clear first about what accumulates where.

What a portal blog is good at — reach

There is no reason to be sniffy about portal blogs. The audience is already there, and you skip the wait a brand-new domain faces before it holds any position in search. It costs almost nothing to start, and a post reaches somebody the day you publish it. Early on, when reach is the constraint, that is a sensible trade.

So advice that says “never use a portal blog” is only half right. The problem is not using one; it is using only one.

Different assets accumulate

Every article you write settles somewhere, and where it settles decides what you control.

The same article leaves behind different things depending on where it lives

The crux is links and addresses. Trust built in search attaches to an address. Write a hundred good posts on a portal blog and that trust attaches to the portal’s address; it does not travel with you when you later move to your own site. Articles built on your own domain with WordPress behave the other way round — they are still at the same address three years later, with every link they earned intact.

How to split the roles

In practice: the original goes on your own site. Complete explanations, articles that lead into your services, reference material with a long life. On the portal, write the same topic from a different angle — shorter, example-led — and point readers to the fuller piece on your site.

Splitting the roles — reach on the portal, accumulation and conversion on your own site

Copying one article wholesale to both places is not worth it. You create a situation where search engines have to decide which copy is the original, and readers get nothing new from the second one. Same topic, different article is the right shape.

The domain is the asset, not the account

One practical caution to finish. A portal account exists inside the platform’s rules. If policy changes or the account runs into trouble, everything accumulated there can become unreachable. A site on your own domain, as long as you hold backups, stays under your control. That is also why domain, hosting and repository accounts should be registered to the business itself, never to an agency.

Building content into a structure is covered further in the SEO archive, and getting your own site into a state that can carry that weight is what our optimization program handles as a single job.

Next part

Wherever an article lives, people share the link. The next part covers what that link looks like when shared — OG tags and preview caches.
