Paste a link into a messenger and a card appears with a title, a description and an image. That card is not assembled by luck — it is read from tags on the page. With no tags, each platform guesses, and the guess is often an advert banner instead of your logo, or a navigation string instead of your opening line.
It matters because a share is usually a recommendation. The moment somebody pastes your link is your best possible exposure, and a broken card at that moment costs you the click.
Four tags do most of the work
In WordPress an SEO plugin writes these tags for you, so in most cases the job is checking rather than creating. The plugin’s editor panel gives each post its own field for a sharing title and image.
Images cause the most mistakes. Check three things: is the URL absolute (relative paths are unreadable to the platforms), is it https, and is it landscape. A tall image gets cropped top and bottom until nobody can tell what it was. And an image that hints at the content of the article earns more clicks than a bare logo.
Why your fix does not show — the preview cache
This is where people lose an afternoon. You correct the tags, paste the link again, and the old card is still there. Nothing is wrong with your code. Each platform stores what it read the first time and reuses it, because asking your server again on every paste would be slow.
Which is why order matters: checking before you share is far cheaper than fixing afterwards. Right after publishing, send the link to yourself once. Three seconds tells you how the card looks, and that single habit removes the frantic edits that otherwise arrive after a campaign has gone out.
A thirty-second pre-publish check
Is the title short enough not to be cut inside the card? Does the description say the important thing in its first sentence? Is the image landscape and served over https? Is the canonical address the same one you are about to share? Four questions, and you are done.
Worth noting: a share card is not the same as your search result. Search engines sometimes rewrite titles and descriptions using their own judgement, whereas share cards generally use the tags exactly as you wrote them — this is the side where you hold more control.
