Series Creating leads and not losing them Part 2 of 8

Where to put the form without interrupting the reading

Form placement is a timing problem, not a design one. Pushed at the wrong moment, a form stops being an invitation and becomes an obstruction.

When deciding where a form goes, people look for “somewhere visible”. But visible and clicked are different problems. Visitors go looking for a form when they are ready, and walk past it however large it is when they are not.

So the criterion is the reader’s state. Sketch out where in the page a visitor reaches the point of thinking “these people are worth asking”.

Map the reading first

How the visitor's state changes — forms get used in the last two squares

Pushed during the first three, a form is an obstruction: you are asking for contact details from someone who does not yet know who you are. But if they reach the last square and no form is in sight, they now have to go hunting for you — and few people take that trouble.

Three places that work

First, at the end of the article. Reading to the end is itself a signal of interest, which makes it the most natural point of invitation. The wording should follow from the article: under a piece about security, an offer to solve that specific problem outperforms a generic “contact us” by a wide margin.

Second, a persistent entry point — a header button, or a fixed bar on mobile, that survives moving between pages. Here it is better not to open a form inline but to send people to the enquiry page: the predictability of always landing in the same place is worth more than saving a click.

Third, a dedicated page with the form and very little else, where traffic from ads or newsletters lands. On that page, do not manufacture extra ways to leave.

What to avoid — patterns that break the reading

The same form: how it appears decides whether it reads as invitation or obstruction

The on-arrival pop-up loses twice over. It makes a demand of someone who has not yet judged your value, and on mobile it can be treated as an intrusive interstitial, which does your search visibility no favours. If you use one at all, trigger it after some reading has happened, with an unmistakable close button.

Field count is part of placement too. In the same position, a form with many boxes sits further away. For a first contact, one way to reach them and one line about what they need is enough; everything else can be asked once the conversation has started.

The relationship between page structure and search traffic is covered further in the SEO archive, and you can see exactly which fields we ask for on our own optimization program page.

Next part

Even with placement solved and submissions rising, nothing happens if the mail never arrives. The next part is the most technical of the series: why enquiry mail lands in spam, and how to fix it.
