Once articles accumulate, the question arrives: is any of this working? Open an analytics tool at that point and twenty screens appear, most of which get closed again without a decision. A founder needs three numbers.
Each number says something different
Impressions tell you which queries the search engine showed you for. No impressions at all is not an article problem but an indexing or topic-choice problem.
Clicks are the share of those impressions that got chosen. Impressions without clicks means the title and description in the results are not answering the question behind that query.
Enquiries are the only number that touches the business. Visitors arriving with no enquiries does not necessarily mean the article is bad — it may be missing a next step, or it may be an article that attracts people who want to understand rather than people who want to buy.
Each symptom has its own remedy
Read the three in order and the break shows up immediately.
The second line is the most common, and happily also the easiest to fix: no rewriting required, only a new title and description. Check which queries the article actually appears for and put that language into the title.
Thirty minutes a month is enough
Check daily and the numbers wobble too much to decide anything; all you spend is nerves. Once a month, compared with the month before, suits a founder.
Three things fill those thirty minutes. Write down five queries whose impressions are growing. Pick two articles with weak click-through and rewrite their titles. And if any article led to an enquiry, add a similar topic to your list.
That last item is the real purpose of the exercise. You read metrics not to grade yourself but to choose what to write next.
Never publish a number you did not measure
One principle to attach here: when numbers from these screens move into marketing copy, stay inside what you actually measured. We hold ourselves to the same rule — an unmeasured figure does not go on any page, because one inflated number takes the credibility of every other claim with it.
Deeper material on measurement and search visibility sits in the SEO archive, and if you would like indexing, speed and structure genuinely measured before and after, that is how our optimization program runs.
Next part
Reading metrics tends to reveal old articles worth fixing. The next part is exactly that — when editing an old post beats writing a new one.
