Series Building the company site without an agency Part 2 of 8

Write the copy first and you build the site once

Design first means trimming what you needed to say so it fits. Writing the copy in order, in one plain document, decides half the screen for you.

Build the screen first and you fill in the words afterwards. Except the words never fit: there is too much room, or not enough. From that point on you are cutting and padding what you meant to say to fit a frame, and the sentence you cared about most is usually the one that goes.

Reversing the order removes that rework entirely. In a word processor or a notes app — it does not matter — write a document containing the sentences of each page, in order. People often call this a text wireframe.

One page, one conclusion

The first thing to settle is what a reader knows after reading this page. If you cannot put that in a single sentence, you are still looking at two pages.

Once the conclusion exists, everything else arranges itself to support it: one conclusion, two or three reasons behind it, and one action to take next. Those three layers fit almost every page you will write.

Use the customer’s words

The most common problem in founder-written copy is not difficult vocabulary; it is writing from your own side of the table. A phrase like “an optimised integrated solution” describes what you sell without ever letting a customer recognise their own problem in it.

The test is simple. Would a customer type this into a search box? Would they use these words explaining the problem to a friend? Sentences that pass both also happen to be good for search visibility, because the words people say and the words they search with are the same words.

None of this bans technical terms. It just keeps them out of the first sentence. Let people recognise themselves first; explain precisely once they are reading.

The copy tells you the layout

By the time the document is finished, most of what you need to design the screen is already decided. Three items means three columns; five means a card list. Long sentences want one wide measure; short ones want a grid.

A copy check before you design — with the top four filled in, design goes quickly

Photographs work the same way. Noting that you need an image that proves this sentence, rather than “something atmospheric here”, saves an afternoon of scrolling through stock libraries later.

Copy written in this order becomes the raw material for search visibility — more on that in the SEO archive. And if the copy is ready but building the screens is where you stall, that is exactly the gap our optimization program covers.

Next part

With the copy prepared, it is time to build. The next part looks at how far the built-in editor gets you and where it stops — the range to establish before buying a page builder.
